Presented at the Toronto Festival with all the red carpet paraphernalia and media fanfare, the television series Homecoming is propelled by Amazon and the combined talents of Julia Roberts, Cuban-American Bobby Cannavale, and the notable screenwriter turned director Sam Esmail, well-known for the previous Mr. Robot.
Conceived from the shifting emotions and suspense of a thriller, Homecoming presents in its pilot episode (premiered on the big screen in Toronto, but which will air on television in a few months) Roberts in the role of a specialist who treats trauma and stress in war veterans at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center. But very soon a series of mysteries surrounding her begin to be uncovered.
Although Homecoming is built around Julia Roberts's character, Bobby Cannavale and Dermot Mulroney play important roles. The Cuban-American actor, Emmy award winner, plays the distracted boss of the protagonist, and must maintain control over her actions.
Homecoming should be a new success in Cannavale's important career, born in 1970 in New Jersey, of Cuban mother and Italian-descended father. He would be well-known especially in American television for two seasons of Third Watch, and for the NBC sitcom Will & Grace, which earned him his first Emmy as a guest actor, as the second would come to him in 2013 with the HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
More recently, Cannavale was in the series Vinyl, produced by Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger, and last year he joined the cast of Mr. Robot during its third season. He has also been nominated for a Tony theater award, and has appeared in colorful supporting roles in films as diverse and well-known as Blue Jasmine (2013), Ant-Man (2015), or I, Tonya (2017).
With Homecoming, Cannavale also demonstrates that it is not necessary to have a long film career to impact the viewers and critics of a festival like Toronto's, which for two or three years has opened its doors to television series (pilot episodes) of singular importance and artistic distinction. Julia Roberts presented herself in Toronto, all smiles and cajoling, to promote not only the television series Homecoming but also the maternal drama Ben is Back.
