Cuban pianist, composer, and cultural manager Orlando Vistel Columbié passed away on May 10, 2026, in Havana at the age of 72 after an illness. His death was confirmed by official Cuban media outlets including Granma, Cubadebate, Prensa Latina, and Juventud Rebelde.
Vistel was born on April 24, 1954, in Santiago de Cuba, into a family with a long musical tradition. He studied at the Esteban Salas Conservatory in his hometown, and later completed his training at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, graduating in Composition under the tutelage of maestro Carlos Fariñas.
His most enduring institutional legacy was the founding of the Cuban Institute of Music (ICM), an organization he served as vice-president and then president. From this position, he made decisive contributions to the development of Cuba's national music infrastructure over several decades.
Beyond his administrative role, Vistel taught at music institutions in Santiago de Cuba and Havana, served as director of the Manzanillo Conservatory, and presided over the Musicians' Association of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC). In 1994, he founded the ensemble Calor Cubano, performing his own compositions alongside arrangements of traditional Cuban music.
In recognition of his sustained contribution to Cuba's artistic and literary culture, he received the Orden Juan Marinello in 2021, one of the highest honors awarded to Cuban intellectuals.
His passing is mourned by colleagues, cultural institutions, and the Cuban artistic community, who remembered him as a pivotal figure in the organization and promotion of Cuban music.
