Cuban music is in mourning. On June 6th, maestro José Luis Quintana "Changuito" passed away in Havana, one of the most influential percussionists of all time and an essential figure in the evolution of rhythm in Cuba.
Born in 1948, Changuito was a founding member of the orchestra Los Van Van, where he marked a before and after in the history of Cuban popular music. Together with Juan Formell, he was a key piece in the creation of songo, a style that fused Afro-Cuban tradition with the innovative spirit of the 70s, revolutionizing the concept of percussion in dance music.
His virtuosity, technique, and creativity made him a living legend. "Changuito" did not just play the drums: he transformed them.
His ability to combine timbales, congas, bells, and drum set into a single rhythmic body changed forever the way music is made on the island.
His legacy transcended borders and inspired generations of musicians around the world.
Various figures in Cuban art have lamented his passing. Trumpeter Alexander Abreu wrote: "The tallest pine tree of Cuban percussion falls. Changuito, rest in peace. Thank you for leaving a legacy that elevates Cuban music. You will always be alive in every drum that sounds like Cuba".
From cultural institutions and musical groups, messages of admiration and mourning have also been expressed. "With deep sorrow we bid farewell to maestro Changuito. His talent and his secret hand changed the history of rhythm in our country.
Today, the earth cries for him and the sky dances with his tumbao", expressed Havana D'Primera.
The artistic community and the Cuban people say goodbye to a true symbol of their culture, whose legacy will endure in every music school, on every stage, and in every drum beat.
From here we send our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, disciples, and all lovers of Cuban music. José Luis Quintana "Changuito" was, is, and will be eternal in the heart of rhythm.
