César Prieto, a baseball player from Cienfuegos who left in May the team that would participate in the Baseball Pre-Olympic in Florida, United States, will sign with the Baltimore Orioles when the next international signing period begins on January 15.
"The Cienfuegos native gained muscle mass and is considered an everyday player in MLB by several evaluators," Romero detailed on his news website, where he noted that with the Orioles, the Cuban will have more opportunities to advance quickly in the prospect system and, perhaps, reach the Major Leagues more swiftly than with other franchises.
Although the amount of the deal has not been confirmed, Romero estimates it could be between 650,000 and 750,000 dollars.
At 22 years old, Prieto is represented by David Hastings and has been training in Tampa since he deserted the official Cuban delegation that ultimately failed in the Pre-Olympic.
Upon breaking with the island's sports system, he had recorded a breakout season in Cuba's National Series.
Prieto set a new record for consecutive games with a hit, a mark that had stood for more than two decades and was held by Santiago native Rey Isaac. Isaac had managed to get hits in 37 consecutive games in 1994, while Prieto raised the achievement to 44 just before leaving Cuba.
