Cuban dancer and choreographer Carlos Acosta decided to bring together his young Cuban company Acosta Danza with the London-based Birmingham Royal Ballet that he directs. The choreographic event is part of the Birmingham International Dance Festival 2022 that commemorates the Commonwealth Games.

The show will feature three choreographies and is titled "On Your Marks". According to notes in the digital program, the performance "celebrates the expressive energy and gravity-defying athleticism of the world-class dancers of the company."

For his part, the dancer and choreographer wrote on his social media: "I am pleased that my company Acosta Danza will meet with Birmingham Royal Ballet at the end of next week. It will be their first collaboration on stage", wrote Acosta.

The partnership of both companies will result in a new choreographic proposal based on the piece "12" that choreographer Marks Jorge Crecis originally created for Acosta Danza. Now both companies will come together to premiere a new version of this "dance-sport" immersed in the power of teamwork, retitled "24"

Also to be seen on stage is a piece by young and brilliant Brazilian choreographer Juliano Nunes, whose recent works include commissions for NDT2 and Marie-Agnès Gillot, has created "Interlinked", a new work inspired by the games.

To close, a dynamic and ecstatic ode to the power of nature and the glory of movement will be presented: "Lazuli Sky" by Will Tuckett, set to the irresistible Shaker Loops by John Adams and premiered by Birmingham Royal Ballet with great success in 2020.

While this great show takes place, Acosta has not stopped creating other choreographic projects. He is currently working in parallel on the choreography "On Before", which he has described as "the most personal stage work I have created so far, and I cannot wait to share this story with you", he also wrote on his social media. "On Before" will premiere at the Norwegian Theatre on July 29 and 30.
