Cuban actress Camila Arteche has found new horizons in Los Angeles with her participation in California Story, an ambitious theatrical production that marks her debut in English on the California stage. The play, which premieres on May 12 at the El Caminito theater, represents the first piece of playwright Roger Q. Mason's California Trilogy, in collaboration with Los Angeles City College.

In this production, Arteche takes on a double interpretive challenge by bringing to life two contrasting characters: Isadora Pico, a nineteenth-century historical figure and sister of the last Mexican governor of California, and Mexicanwoman, a contemporary character who symbolizes the struggle to maintain cultural identity in foreign lands.

"The play speaks to all immigrants, regardless of their country of origin," the actress revealed to Diario Las Américas. "I feel very identified with it because I also came from Cuba pursuing that American dream, but now I understand that it's not about pursuing the myth, but about dismantling it and building my own dream," she added, highlighting the importance of maintaining her roots while building her career.

The production explores the history of Pío Pico, the last Mexican governor of California, whose pursuit of the American dream leads him to sacrifice family, identity, and integrity in his effort to build a real estate empire, according to the aforementioned source. The plot develops in a universe that combines historical elements with a dystopian vision of the future, where themes such as race, power, and territory are interwoven with existential questions.

For Arteche, this project represents much more than a theatrical role. "Carrying the emotional baggage of a migrant woman in another language has been a challenge and an honor," Arteche confessed in the aforementioned conversation, who, in addition to acting, also sings, dances, and ice skates on stage, demonstrating her artistic versatility.

The production features a top-tier creative team, including the work of Salmah Beydoun in set design and projections, Levi Manners in sound design, and Karen Boyers in costume design. "I am honored to represent Latino culture in the United States in this production," Camila expressed, emphasizing the importance of making the Latino experience visible through art.

The artistic trajectory of this young woman began at an early age in her native Havana, where she was born on April 12, 1990. At 17 years old, she took her first professional steps in the Cuban telenovela Aquí Estamos, which marked the beginning of a career that would lead her to stand out especially in television, film, and theater.

She shone on stage alongside prestigious companies such as El Público, by Carlos Díaz, and Jazz Vila Projects, while in the seventh art she left her mark in productions such as Sergio y Sergueí and El Acompañante. The latter earned her the award from the Association of Entertainment Critics of New York as best supporting actress.

She has accumulated international recognitions such as awards at the Five Continent International Film Festival in Venezuela and at the International Short Film Festival of Torrelavega.

In 2017, she showed another facet of her talent by presenting the successful program Bailando en Cuba, from RTV Comercial, alongside Marlon Pijuan and Carlos Solar.

Her decision to emigrate to the United States in 2019 did not stop her rising career, but rather opened new doors for her artistic development, as demonstrated by her current participation in California Story.
