Former United States Senator Bob Menéndez was sentenced to 11 years in prison on Wednesday for accepting bribes in cash and gold bars and acting as an agent for Egypt while selling his influence to businessmen eager to exploit his political power.

Federal District Judge Sidney H. Stein, in Manhattan, announced the sentence after Menéndez told him, in tears, that he had lost everything that mattered to him, except his wife.

"You were successful, powerful, you were at the top of our political system," the judge said. "At some point, and I don't know when it was, you lost your way and working for the public good became working for your own good."

Prosecutors had requested a 15-year prison sentence for the Democrat who was convicted on multiple counts, including acting as an agent for Egypt by selling his considerable influence in Washington for bribes valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Given the opportunity to speak before being sentenced, Menéndez broke down several times while describing his accomplishments.

His lawyer Adam Fee told Stein to give Menéndez credit for a "life of extraordinary public service and personal sacrifices."

"Despite his decades of service, he is now better known as gold bar Bob," Fee said.

Menéndez's lawyers had said before sentencing that their client deserved less than two years in prison, but Fee said the defense team decided to ask that Menéndez receive no more than eight years after hearing Stein give substantial prison terms to two New Jersey businessmen convicted of paying bribes to the senator. Fred Daibes, a real estate developer, received seven years and a fine of 1.75 million dollars. Wael Hana, a businessman, received eight years, a fine of 1.25 million dollars, and was ordered to forfeit 125,000 dollars.

The sentence was handed down by Judge Sidney Stein, who described the corruption scheme as "long-running and exceptionally grave."

With this conviction, Menéndez became the first senator in United States history to be convicted of acting as a foreign agent.

According to the charges, Menéndez and his associates participated in a bribery scheme that extended for years, involving the governments of Egypt and Qatar. Prosecutors described the case as an "exceptionally serious abuse of power" within the U.S. Legislature.

During the trial, which lasted nine weeks, evidence was presented showing that the former senator received bribes that included more than 100,000 dollars in gold bars and cash money. He was also accused of accepting checks in exchange for political favors.

Menéndez's wife, Nadine, is also accused of participating in the bribery scheme and will be tried on March 18. She is charged with having received payments for fictitious work as part of the corruption scheme.

"Menéndez, who swore to represent the United States and the state of New Jersey, put his high office up for sale in exchange for bribes," prosecutors stated in their pre-sentence argument.
