Victoriano Gustavo Sierra González

Gustavo Sierra graduated as a physician and completed a specialty in immunology. He subsequently earned a Doctorate in Medical Sciences. Senior Researcher, First-Level Senior Biotechnologist, Full Member of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba.

He was President of the Expert Committee of Cuba's Vaccine Program, Founder and First President of the Cuban Society of Immunology, Member of the Advisory Committee on Vaccines of MINSAP, President of the Permanent National Court of Scientific Degrees in Basic Medical Sciences.

Member of other Permanent National Courts of Scientific Degrees. Member of the Commission of Scientific Degrees in Basic Sciences of ISCMH. Member of the National Jury of the Annual Health Prize.

He was founder of the Finlay Institute of Vaccines and Director of Scientific Policy at BioCubaFarma. Currently, he served as an advisor to BioCubaFarma.

Professor of Biochemistry and Immunology at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences Villa Clara, until requested by the Council of State as an Immunologist for the CIB [Interferon Project]. He is one of the authors of the development of the first Cuban recombinant Interferon and other recombinant substances, fundamentally in immunological aspects such as monoclonal antibodies that were required for these objectives.

Principal author of the Anti-Meningococcal BC Vaccine and the first patent in the world against meningococcus B, received the WIPO Gold Medal.

He is one of the principal authors or co-author of other vaccines, some already in clinical use or various stages of development: Trivalent Anti-Leptospirosis, Anti-Salmonella Typhi, Anti-Cholera, Anti-Amoeba, Anti-TB…, etc.

Author, inventor of vaccine adjuvants, several derived from proteoliposomal technology of which he is the creator.

He serves as Adjunct Professor at several Universities. Named Caribean Founder Professor by the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) and the Caribbean and Central America Brain Research Organization (CARBRO).

Advisor to PAHO, WHO. Vaccine Advisory Committee. He is a Tutor of more than 45 Doctorate students, of which 25 have already successfully defended their Scientific Degree, others at different stages of training and dozens of Masters, Specialists and Diplomas.

Individual and collective Orders "Carlos J. Finlay" from the Council of State. Order for Merit José Antonio Echeverría, XX Anniversary Medal, Lázaro Peña Order of First Grade, Juan Tomás Roig Distinction, XXX Anniversary Commemorative Medal ACC, among other numerous distinctions.

National Vanguard of National Unions of Health and Science Workers in several years. Deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power during several Legislatures, Member of the Science Commission of Parliament. Elected as Merit Academic of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba as of September 17, 2011.
