As a sad irony, just one day before celebrating Immunology Day, comes the sad news that Dr. Gustavo Sierra, author of the VA-MENGOC-BC vaccine and founding president of the Cuban Society of Immunology, died yesterday as a victim of COVID-19.
Gustavo dedicated much of his life to the development of vaccines in Cuba and dies precisely in the midst of the battle for the application of Cuban vaccine candidates, without the interferon of one of the members of that team that achieved its production in Cuba and without the development of all Cuban genetic engineering and molecular immunology drugs being able to help him in his recovery.
"His legacy and example will forever mark generations of Cuban scientists," is an idea that colleagues and friends who had the pleasure of knowing the man and his contributions recognized within the world of science now emphasize.
Creator alongside scientist Concepción (Conchita) Campa of the Cuban antimeningococcal vaccine, a platform on which one of the vaccine candidates against SARS-CoV-2 is based today: Soberana 01, founder of the Finlay Institute of Vaccines, academician of merit of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba and deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power for many years, Gustavo Sierra was a paradigm of dedication and humanism.
