While still very young, he joined the Ala Izquierda Estudiantil and the Liga Juvenil Comunista. He earned his doctorate in Philosophy and Letters from the Universidad de La Habana in 1941. He is one of the initiators of Cuban Marxist historiography. A tireless political activist, he became involved in student struggles from a very young age. In 1961 he was appointed professor of History of Cuba at the Escuela de Ciencias Políticas and the following year he became director of the Escuela de Historia, both at the Universidad de La Habana. He collaborated in Hoy, Última Hora, Fundamentos, El Comunista, Dialéctica, La Calle, El Pitirre, Orientador Revolucionario, Nueva Revista Cubana, Cuba Socialista and Granma, as well as in Historia Moderna, of Moscow.
He represented Cuba at the XX International Congress of Historical Sciences (Vienna, 1965) and at the Conference of Historians of Socialist Countries (Moscow, 1965).
