Rosa María Angulo Díaz Canel

Prominent educator. She established important guidelines in the teaching of Biology in Cuba. From 1959 onwards, she developed guidance activities for literacy instructors. She was the founder of the Institute for Educational Advancement (ISE) in Santa Clara.

She was born in Santa Clara on June 23, 1914. She studied her High School degree at the Institute of Secondary Education, as well as at the Normal School in Santa Clara.

She earned a Doctorate degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Havana.

She began her long working career in Havana at the private school "Sepúlveda", where she taught High School classes, and later entered as Full Professor at the Institute of Marianao, a position she obtained in 1941 through competitive examination, and which she held continuously until 1946; at this institution she was a professor of Natural Sciences, Anatomy, Mineralogy, Crystallography and Geology, and for the latter three subjects she adapted her thesis "Classical and Modern Mineralogical Studies".

Connected to some Dominican exiles and others, she participated in organizing the expedition to Santo Domingo, known as "Cayo Confites"; she was the only woman who remained in the training camp that was located at the Polytechnic School in Holguín, and she also provided her home for meetings.

In 1954, she obtained a position as Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the Central University of Las Villas "Marta Abreu", and subsequently moved to the School of Sciences, where she taught Crystallography, Mineralogy, Geology, General Paleontology and Petrography, and served as Dean.

In 1964, with the creation of the pedagogical institutes, she was appointed subdirector of the Sciences Section of the Pedagogical Institute "Félix Varela" in Santa Clara.

She presided over the National Commission of Plans and Programs of the pedagogical institutes in the Biology degree program. She conceived the Biology curricula at the University Pedagogical Unit "Manuel Ascunce Domenech".

She was the National Inspector of Biology for Basic Secondary and Pre-University schools; she introduced the Agricultural subject and its didactic approach through seminars.

This prominent educator established important guidelines in the teaching of Biology in Cuba, both directly as a professor and through numerous books she wrote.

She received various recognitions, among which are: National Order "Frank País", Medal "José Tey", Special Distinction from the Minister of Higher Education, Annual Award for Scientific-Technical Merit.

In 1981, the National Commission of Scientific Degrees granted her directly the scientific degree of Doctor in Pedagogical Sciences.
