Romualdo Alonso Pino

Romualdo Alonso Pino, known in the world of improvised verse as "El Pino de Cangrejeras," was a Cuban repentista from Cangrejeras, in the municipality of Bauta, in today's Artemisa province. According to the décima platform D'Canturía, he was born on September 8, 1947.

He was one of the island's best-known improvisers in the 1980s and 1990s, when his verse duels on the long-running TV program Palmas y Cañas made him a favorite with rural audiences and décima fans. He formed memorable pairings with fellow repentistas Elio Vidal, "El Cucalambito," and José Miguel Bello, "El Intelectual de Marianao."

He shared his art and his life with repentista Mercy Estrada. He died on October 11, 2026, in the village of La Salud, in Quivicán, Mayabeque, while taking part in a canturía, shortly after improvising alongside the young repentista Yasel García.
