He was a renowned interpreter of genres such as son and bolero, member of groups such as Conjunto Siboney, the Sonora de Estanislao Sureda "Laíto" and Conjunto Roberto Faz.
With the latter he achieved great popularity, thanks to songs such as "El Menú", known for its chorus "Que le pongan salsa", which reached the number one spot on the country's hit lists.
Furthermore, with Conjunto Roberto Faz he recorded several albums and conducted tours and international performances in countries such as Panama, Mexico, Peru and Colombia, according to ICM.
In 1991 he created his own group, El Muso y su Gran Sonora, with which he performed on different stages and recorded the album Las tres caras del son, a project alongside the also notable son singers Cándido Fabré and Eduardo "Tiburón" Morales.
Montero also recorded with artists of the caliber of Pablo Milanés and Omara Portuondo, and performed as the second voice on the popular song "Idilio" with Laíto y su Sonora.
Furthermore, he participated in prominent radio and television programs in Cuba and performed as a soloist and judge in several editions of the international festival "Boleros de Oro".
