Rolando Jesús Rodríguez García

Cuban historian and researcher. Law graduate. He studied Philosophy and was a founding professor of the Philosophy Department at the University of Havana. Later he would become its director. In addition to teaching and directing the Department, he was appointed director of Revolutionary Editions.

In 1967, he founded and presided over the Cuban Institute of the Book and in 1976 was appointed vice minister of Culture and president of the Editorial Council of that ministry. In 1981 he moved to the Secretary of the Council of Ministers as head of the area of social affairs and, later, was appointed its coordinator. Currently he is an advisor for special affairs of that same entity.

He was born in Santa Clara. He completed his high school education at Colegio Martí. He participated in student struggles against the Batista dictatorship and was detained in 1957.

He studied law at the University of Havana, where he received his doctorate in 1962. He was a leader of the University Student Federation (FEU) at the University of Havana and founder of the University Brigades José Antonio Echeverría, which he joined on October 26, 1959.

He participated in the takeover of the University that initiated the university reform process. He joined in 1960 the Association of Rebel Youth (AJR) and moved in 1962 to the Union of Communist Youth (UJC).

In 1962 he began studying Philosophy at the National School of PURS Raúl Cepero Bonilla and graduated as a professor of this subject in 1963. He then moved to the University of Havana, as an assistant professor of Marxist philosophy. In 1964 he was appointed subdirector of the Philosophy Department and in 1966 was appointed director.

In 1961 he was in the Fight against Bandits, in the voluntary platoon of the AJR that went to Escambray. In 1962 he moved to battalion 154 and participated in the mobilizations at Girón, and in the October Crisis he was in the perimeter defense of the Guanajay rocket base.

Fidel Castro appointed him head of the Special Plan for Revolutionary Editions and in 1967 the Council of Ministers created the Institute of the Book and he was appointed its president.

In 1968 he asked to leave one of the two responsibilities, the Cuban Institute of the Book (ICL) or the Philosophy Department and the Commander in Chief decided that he remain at the ICL, at the head of which he remained until 1976. In that year he became vice minister of culture and president of the editorial council of the ministry.

In 1971 he founded the current system of publishing houses, among them Editorial Ciencias Sociales, creating its collections, highlighting "Word of Cuba". In that same year, at the invitation of President Salvador Allende, he provided advisory services in the editorial field to Chile.

At the invitation of the leadership of the Sandinista Front, he provided advisory services in the editorial field to Nicaragua in 1979. In 1980 he was transferred to the secretary of the Council of Ministers to attend to Education, Culture, Sports, Health, Communications and social affairs.

In 1989 he was appointed coordinator of the secretariat, while continuing to attend to Education, Culture, Sports, Health, Communications and social affairs and, furthermore, drafted the minutes of the council of ministers. In that year he published his novel Heavenly Republic, reprinted in Spain in 1990.

In 1996 Under the Skin of the Manigua came out, about the Ten Years War and the removal of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. From 1987 to 2001 he worked at the National Archive of Cuba, the National Library, the Coronado Archive of the Library of the Central University of Las Villas, the Institute of History of Cuba, the Provincial Archive of Sancti Spíritus, all of these in Cuba; at the National Archives, the Library of Congress and the New York Public Library, of the United States; at the National Historical Archive, the Archive of the Royal Palace of Madrid, the General Military Archives of Madrid and General Military of Segovia, both of the Institute of Military History and Culture, the National Library, the General Archive of Administration, of Alcalá de Henares, all of Spain; the National Library, Venezuela, and conducted interviews in Caracas and Maracay, Venezuela, with protagonists of passages linked to the history of Cuba and search for bibliographic sources.

He has delivered hundreds of lectures on the subject of Cuban history. He has been appointed Full Professor of Cuban History at the University of Havana and in 2002 member of the Chair of Cuban Research at the University of Nottingham, Great Britain, 2002. He serves as vice president of the Cultural and Scientific Foundation of Madrid José Martí and is its representative in Cuba.

He chaired the jury for the National Publishing Award, Havana, 1999. He chairs one of the courts for the History Awards organized by the National FEU, 2008. He has been a mentor for two diploma works, in the degree in history, at the University of Havana, on autonomism.

Rated with 5 and commendation from the court. He received the National Award for Social Sciences 2007, awarded during the XVII Book Fair Book Fair of 2008, Havana, Cuba. Coverage in Trabajadores and in La Jiribilla. In the framework of the XVIII International Book Fair 2009, he will be awarded the National History Award 2008.

He has published numerous works in Cuban and foreign press and given dozens of lectures at universities and academic and cultural centers in Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia and Spain. He is a member of the Chair of Cuban Studies at the University of Wolverhampton, Great Britain.
