Reynaldo Mañalich Comas

Reynaldo Mañalich was a Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Medical Sciences. Specialist of II Degree in Nephrology and Researcher of Merit. Full Member of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba. He received the Annual Health Award from the Ministry of Public Health in 2018.

Doctor Mañalich was one of the most notable researchers in Cuban and Latin American nephrology. For his work and his numerous scientific articles published in national and international journals, he was the most cited Cuban nephrologist in the world in this specialty.

He was a pioneer of nephrology in Cuba and one of the founders, along with Dr. Abelardo Buch, of the Institute of Nephrology. He was one of the pioneers of kidney transplantation and nuclear nephrology in the country. He was Head of the Renal Pathophysiology Laboratory of that institution.

For his work and his numerous scientific articles published in national and international journals, he was the most cited Cuban nephrologist in the world in the specialty. Moreover, he was the Cuban nephrologist who had the greatest scientific impact in explaining kidney damage caused by low birth weight in humans, published in Kidney International.

During his intense and fruitful life, he received numerous awards, recognitions and honors, including National Hero of Labor, Award for Scientific Merit for Lifetime Achievement, Awards from the Academy of Sciences of Cuba and the University of Barcelona, Order Frank País of first and second degree, according to a note from the Academy of Sciences.
