Newton Briones Fernández

Muerte: February 18, 1981

He was born in the old province of Oriente, and died at "Calixto García" Hospital in Ciudad de la Habana.

From his youth, he joined the revolutionary and popular movement. He fought against the Machado tyranny and belonged to the direct action group directed by Floro Pérez. He was closely linked to Antonio Guiteras, being part of the Central Committee of Joven Cuba, and assumed by order of the latter the leadership of Action and Sabotage of the organization on the eve of the events at Morrillo.

He was an active fighter against the Batista tyranny, standing out for his firm and uncompromising stance.

Since the popular triumph of 1959, he distinguished himself through his efforts in the consolidation of the Socialist Revolution. He integrated into the Revolutionary Armed Forces, where he served as a military physician for almost a decade.

Precisely, on the occasion of the attack at Playa Girón, he was mobilized and sent to the combat front where he displayed great activity in the field hospitals.

Until the last moments of his life he remained working and conveying to new generations his professional experiences as an Otolaryngology specialist.

At the moment of his death he was working as head of ward at "Salvador Allende" hospital (former Covadonga) and as a professor at the Faculty of Medicine No. 2, in the ORL department at the University of la Habana.
