Cuban writer, narrator and screenwriter. Author of novels and short stories that address the themes of corruption, double morality and prostitution within the framework of revolutionary Cuba. He is situated among the greatest exponents of detective literature on the island. He is coordinator of the UNEAC.
Reflecting with absolute honesty about his reality and his time, and achieving that his contemporaries see themselves reflected in his narrative, are concerns that obsess this writer of detective fiction who, more than in enigmas, is interested in speaking about the society in which he lives and leaving testimony of it so that the man of the future can understand the man of today, immersed in a process such as the Cuban Revolution.
His initial short story collection is written within the theme of violence: the struggle against bandits (1961-1965), the revolution's confrontation with armed enemy bands, men with differing political ideas settling their differences with weapons.
Soon Bergues begins to concern himself with another theme; he takes notice of Cuba in the eighties and wants to write about drug trafficking (Estuario de un verano, unpublished novel) and especially about corruption, the corruption of officials, administrative corruption, police and judicial corruption.
Vientos y pájaros (1985) will already touch on these themes that will appear likewise in the trilogy made up of Propietario del alba, Habanera invernal and El cordero asesinado, the latter unfinished, novels that serve as a pretext for Bergues to speak about Cuba from 1989 onwards.
A historical detective novel is Jerusalén, la ciudad deseada. Its story takes place after the death of Christ, when there are still witnesses to his messianic preaching, and it narrates the struggle between Roman and Hebrew culture. Bergues, who wrote this book through arduous research that took him five years, seems to tell the reader from its pages that the society that does not destroy the sources of corruption, loses ground, cannot sustain itself and in the long run is destroyed by its enemies.
The rich inner world of his characters stands out in Bergues's books, imaginary beings constructed from real entities.
