Osvaldo Martínez Martínez

Distinguished Cuban economist. President of the Commission on Economic Affairs of the Cuban Parliament and director of the Center for Studies of the World Economy.

Born in the city of Matanzas. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Economics in 1967, Doctor in Economic Sciences (Institute of International Relations of Potsdam, Germany, in 1985), Full Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Havana, Senior Researcher.

He served as Minister of Economy and Planning of the Republic of Cuba during the first quarter of 1995.

He is a Deputy to the Cuban Parliament and current President of the Permanent Commission on Economic Affairs of said Parliament. Reelected for the fourth time as Deputy and President of the Commission for the 2008-2010 term. He is Director of the Center for Studies of the World Economy (CIEM).

Adviser to Cuban delegations to the General Assembly of the United Nations (1974-1976), to the Summit Conferences of Non-Aligned Countries held in Havana (1979), New Delhi (1983), Harare (1986), Belgrade (1989), Havana (2007).

Member of the Group of Experts of the United Nations on the issue of the Right to Development (1994), Representative of Cuba in the Economic and Financial Commission of the General Assembly of the United Nations (1974-1976), before the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC, 1976) and on the Board of the Centre of the South (Geneva – 1996-1999), Member of the ad hoc panel of economists of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, member of official delegations in visits by the President of the Council of State to various countries. Elected in an individual capacity Member of the Superior Council of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences.

Recognition
For his valuable contributions in the field of economic sciences, he received the National Prize for Economics of the Republic of Cuba in 1999.
