Néstor Carbonell Rivero

Leonel, X, Tartaria, Carlos de Yolanda

Died: June 30, 1966

Cuban writer, historian, and lawyer who collaborated in various publications of his time. He cultivated academic oratory. He disseminated the ideology of José Martí.

He was born in Alquízar, Cuba and in 1887 emigrated with his family to the United States. He received his primary education from his father, Néstor Leonelo Carbonell. He returned to Cuba and studied secondary education at the Instituto de Pinar del Río. Later he obtained the degree of Doctor in Public Law from the Universidad de La Habana.

He was ambassador of Cuba to Argentina and Peru and minister to Argentina, Chile, and Colombia. He held the positions of Special Inspector in the Department of Public Instruction and director of the Pan American Office of the State Department. Member of the Academia de la Historia de Cuba, the Academia Nacional de Artes y Letras, the Academia Cubana de la Lengua, and several Latin American institutions.

He founded the journals "Letras" and "Don Pepe," the latter for children. He also collaborated in El Mundo and "La Unión Española." He founded the "Biblioteca Cubana" editions. He published some works of a historical nature in collaboration with Emeterio Santovenia.

He cultivated academic oratory. He was a scholar of the work of José Martí. He used the pseudonyms Leonel, X, Tartaria, and Carlos de Yolanda.
