Mijail Mulkay
Theater and television actor. He has been part of important companies in the Cuban theater scene such as Teatro Estudio, Grupo Irrumpe, and El Público. Graduated as an actor and theater director from ISA.
He was born in La Habana. Theater actor since 1992, he has been part of some of the most important companies in the Cuban theater scene, such as Teatro Estudio, Grupo Irrumpe, and El Público. In 1997 he graduated as an actor and theater director from the Instituto Superior de Arte.
Despite being young, he has directed theatrical productions: Azul, a one-man show, and La verdadera culpa de Juan Clemente Zenea by Cuban playwright Abilio Estévez.
This Cuban based in Colombia studied performing arts at the Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana, specializing in acting. After extensive experience in television, film, and theater in Cuba, he arrived in Colombia in 2005 and since then has worked in theater: Esta noche se improvisa, Réquiem por un Carnaval, Por eso yo soy de Cuba, Con la casa a acuestas, and El lobo y Caperucita. And in television: Padres e hijos, La mujer en el espejo, La ex, Las profesionales del servicio, Montecristo, Mujeres asesinas, Sin senos no hay paraíso, Los caballeros las prefieren brutas, Los Victorinos, Amor sincero, El clon, A corazón abierto, Las Santísimas, and La primera dama. He also starred in the film by Dago Producciones, El escritor de telenovelas.
He arrived in Colombia after auditioning for the RCN Channel telenovela Los Reyes, where he was not selected but his then-wife Jacqueline Arenal was selected, from whom he later divorced in 2005. He then began a relationship with actress and mother of his son Alina Lozano, who helped him when he fell into deep depression and addiction to drugs and alcohol. This relationship ended in 2008 with a new love, Majida Issa, whom he married in 2008 and separated from in November 2012.
The camera does not favor Mijaíl Mulkay. Perhaps blue jeans, tight shirts, and sneakers look better on him than the suits and ties worn by Leonardo, his character in La ex. In what he does resemble the unfaithful man, admired by men and hated by women, is in his good humor.
The Cuban actor jokes about everything. He did so when he arrived in Colombia, where his marriage—"which was already going poorly"—completely fell apart and he was out of work for a year.
"At that moment I thought of the words of Cuban playwright Virgilio Piñera: 'The good thing about this is how bad it's getting,'" the actor says with that distinctive "tumbao" of those from the Caribbean island.
He says that RCN came to Cuba to hold auditions for La viuda de la mafia, but he was in a telenovela and his countryman Abel Rodriguez got the leading role. Later, he says, they brought him for Los Reyes and nothing happened, while his ex, Jackeline Arenal, Aunt Yoli, did get the telenovela when he introduced her.
He auditioned for Vuelo 1503, and nothing there either. Time passed and nothing worked out: "Of course I got depressed and felt that I wasn't worth anything as a person or as a professional."
His representatives insisted that as a first-rate actor in his country, he couldn't do small appearances. But he disagreed and pushed to accept Padres a hijos, La mujer en el espejo, and Los ojos de mi calle. "The important thing was to work." Then La ex came along and from there his life settled down. "I don't consider myself arrogant, but I learned that you always have to be humble and that you shouldn't boast about what you haven't yet done."
And he has plans: to direct and participate in Por eso somos cubanos (because of the similarities between Cubans and Colombians), a concert café, and to make a short film for which he will bring his father, who is also an actor.

He moved to Miami last year. Here he usually acts in the sketches of El Happy Hour, on América Tevé channel, and wants to shine with his own light. For this reason he prepared a one-man show for the Teatro Bellas Artes on Calle Ocho. It is Azul, in which he had the musical accompaniment of singer Olga Lidia Thomas and musician Isaac Rodríguez. "It is a tribute to Cuban culture," said Mulkay about the show produced by Carlucho.
