Miguel Ángel Macau García

Journalist, poet, and playwright.

He studied primary and secondary education in his native city, Matanzas. He became known as a poet in Arpas amigas (Matanzas, Imp. El Escritorio, 1906), together with José G. Villa.

He was editor of the magazine El Estudiante and the newspaper La Lucha, both from Matanzas.

He graduated as a Doctor of Civil Law from the University of Havana in 1914. He practiced law in Matanzas for seven years.

He aspired to be a representative to the Chamber for the Popular Party of his native city.

As a poet and playwright he was awarded on three occasions in the Floral Games of Oriente (1914, 1916, and 1919).

He traveled to the United States on two occasions; later he moved to Havana, where he worked as a municipal judge of Vedado.

In 1934 he was appointed accountant of the Executive Committee and Supreme Assembly of the Cuban Red Cross, of whose magazine Cruz Roja Cubana he was co-director from 1937.

In 1957 he contributed to Pueblo and Diario de la Marina.

Later he retired from law practice. He is the author of legal works and musical compositions. Shortly before his death, he received a tribute from the Ateneo de La Habana, of which he was a member.

He is the author of the libretto for the zarzuela Soledad, by Rodrigo Prats (1932). He also published and premiered, in his native city and in Havana, a large number of dramas and comedies, among which may be cited La justicia en la inconsciencia, La fuerza incontrastable, and La herencia maldita.

In 1950 he published in Mexico a compilation of his dramatic works.

He died in Havana in 1971.
