Elsa Claro Madruga

Died: July 23, 2021

Poet, narrator, analyst, politician and Cuban journalist specializing in international affairs. Prestigious journalism professional who worked in the country's main media outlets such as Granma Internacional, Juventud Rebelde and Bohemia.

Elsa was born in La Habana in 1943. She was a member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC).

A regular panelist on Mesa Redonda and tireless contributor to both Cubadebate and the Cubaperiodistas website, she stood out for her thorough and serious approach to international issues and became a reference point for the treatment of contemporary world topics.

Her legacy is reflected in the hundreds of articles, commentaries, and interviews that she equally contributed to radio programs, fundamentally on Radio Progreso, where her voice distinguished the dawn in the program A Primera Hora.

Furthermore, Elsa published several poetry collections, such as Para crecer y darme cuenta; Agua y fuego (1981), with a bilingual edition in the former Czechoslovakia; Los caminos y el silencio (1990) and Semillas del Atardecer (2007). She has in editorial process Una flor que ya no existe (poetry); Eros derrotado and Danza para descarriados (short stories); Buscando un zarzal (novel). Her poems appear in several Cuban and foreign anthologies and translated into several languages.

As a result of her work in the journalism field are the titles: Mini Siquis, with three editions by the publishers Orbe and Ciencia y Técnica in 1980, 1983 and 1989 and Ocaso del mito (1989).
