Alberto Riera Gómez

Died: January 2, 1947

Journalist, Doctor of Law, poet, active participant in the struggle against the government of Gerardo Machado. Author of articles and poems in multiple newspapers and magazines of the era.

He completed his high school studies in his native city, Matanzas, where he began his career as a journalist at El Imparcial. He graduated with a Doctor of Law degree from the Universidad de la Habana. He held the positions of correctional judge in Limonar, prosecutor of the Judicial District of Bejucal, examining judge of Matanzas, and lawyer for the Ministry of Finance.

From 1930 he took an active part in the struggle against Gerardo Machado, especially as a lawyer for labor organizations and revolutionary labor leaders. He worked as a proofreader at the newspaper La Prensa in Havana until 1925, the year he moved to El Mundo as a cable translator and worked at the Heraldo de Cuba.

He was an editor of Ahora. When "Ahora" closed, he returned to "El Mundo." Among the works he published in Almanaque de El Mundo (1930-1932) are those titled "History of the Proletariat in Cuba," "The Fascist State," and "The Soviet State."

He is the author of articles and poems in multiple newspapers and magazines of the era. His verses appear, among other anthologies, in "La poesía cubana" in 1936 (1937) with prologue and appendix by Juan Ramón Jiménez.
