Luis Victoriano Betancourt Salgado

A lawyer, poet, journalist, and writer, he represented the west in the Chamber of Representatives of the Republic in Arms, and his presence was linked to more than one controversial event of the Ten Years' War.

He was the most complete representation of the progressive ideological evolution of Cuban costumbrismo. From his twenties, he began to collaborate in various periodical publications.

Based in Matanzas from a very young age, son of the costumbrista writer José Victoriano Betancourt. He studied at the school La Empresa of the Guiteras brothers.

Licensed in Civil and Canon Law from the University of Havana (1866), he had returned to the capital in 1860 and from 1863 began to collaborate in periodical publications.

After the outbreak of war in 68, he left for Nassau and returned in the expedition of the "Galvanic" led by Manuel de Quesada. In the ranks of the Liberation Army. In early 1869, he held the presidency of the Court Martial of Camagüey with Rafael Morales as secretary and Ramón Pérez Trujillo as member. Later he was deputy, secretary, and president of the Chamber of Representatives of the Republic in Arms. In July of that year he entered the Chamber and on August 18, together with other western deputies, ratified the text of the Constitution of Guáimaro.

At the same time, he collaborated in the mambí newspapers "El cubano libre," "La estrella solitaria," and "Boletín de la Revolución."

He belonged to the editorial board of El Siglo (1863), founded the satirical newspaper El Rigoletto (1865). In the insurgent forces, he collaborated with El Cubano Libre, La Estrella Solitaria, and Boletín de la Revolución.

After the Pact of Zanjón, he wrote in various magazines and newspapers, including: El Siglo, El Occidente, La Aurora, El Triunfo, El País, and La Discusión.

At the end of the Ten Years' War, he worked as a lawyer, teacher, and journalist until his death in 1885.
