Most Relevant Public Space Projects
Sculptural Complex Plaza del Carmen (Camagüey)

In the Historic Center of this Cuban city of Camagüey, Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is located one of its most picturesque places, Plaza del Carmen, which emerged in the first decades of the 19th century. This plaza is today a relevant architectural complex of the city - founded in 1514 by the Spanish - which constitutes an important reservoir of traditional Camagueyan popular culture.

A beautiful group of sculptural pieces, created by the renowned Cuban artist Martha Jiménez, recreate characters who once lived in that space. The series includes other elements, with allusions to people, as well as benches and planters. Regional customary aspects of the local environment identify the characters of the sculptural ensemble, which adds in contemporary times a new attraction to one of the main five plazas of the oldest part of the locality. Among the pieces that most catch the visitor's attention is the one depicting a newspaper reader, also a neighbor of the area near the aforementioned enclosure.

The environment features a splendid popular architecture, with its irregular courtyards and simple and modest facades, even in those that following the currents of modernity adorned their entrances. A great force of Afro-Cuban folklore, due to the ancient presence here of African councils, combines the context of the old residential area of mulattoes and poor blacks.

Longitudinal Park (Camagüey)

It is a ceramic work, created in 2004, representing two bicycle performers about to float in space, a pair of harlequins appear floating in front of two wheels and a handlebar against a light blue background. The bicycle performers resemble circus acrobats. He wears harlequin pants, green and black, and is shirtless, with red hair tied in braids ending in colorful beads. She wears an aqua-colored dress with a floral pattern in greens, whites and blacks. Her legs are covered with black stockings, uncovered because her dress is blown by the wind. She approaches him; her rosy arm joins his dark arm. The ascension of bodies toward a kiss places love at the center of the daily lives of peoples.

Sculpture at Marta Abreu School (Camagüey)

This sculpture representing children playing with marbles, created in 2004 and authored by artist Martha Jiménez Pérez, is located at Marta Abreu School, near Plaza del Carmen in Camagüey, in the area of the city declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2008.

Mural at La Palma Store (Camagüey)

The La Palma Mural was created by artist Martha Jiménez Pérez in 2014. It is located at La Palma Store, situated on República street in the city of Camagüey. This town was founded by the Spanish in Cuba, under the initial name of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe.

Sculptures at Café Ciudad (Camagüey)

The Triptych of sculptures (2012) by artist Martha Jiménez is located at Café Ciudad. These artworks are hung and swing in the courtyard of Café Ciudad, the most frequented coffee shop in the monumental center of the city of Camagüey. Three interesting ceramic pieces, each seated on a swing, are an attractive offering during a visit to enjoy coffee while enjoying the ambiance of plants as well.

The triptych has the main idea of coffee as an infusion that attracts pleasant gathering, referring to Bacchus celebrations. The three figures (Bacchus and the two female harlequins) are related not only to daily life, but also to the ritual of enjoyed beverages, in harmony with the place and its architecture. The luxurious courtyard features an intimate atmosphere for savoring a steaming cup of coffee, an exquisite wine, and the artistic works of Martha Jimenez, to beautify the simplicity of a style, of a time and a city that never forgets its culture.

Works at Hotel El Marqués (Camagüey)

The work Women (2014) is located in Camagüey. Hotel El Marqués welcomes its guests with an old-fashioned woman, as if to wish visitors an unforgettable stay. Martha Jiménez has substantially contributed to the ambiance of new hotels, exquisitely adorned with this and other tourism projects. Such hotels have the privilege of displaying unique works, which are already part of the heritage of the city of Camagüey.

Work at Hotel Santa María (Camagüey)

The sculpture Santa María (2014) is a work by artist Martha Jiménez Pérez. Passersby were fascinated to see in the lobby niche of Hotel Santa María a sculpture of Santa María that seems to gaze steadily at an old city of half a century that is awakening to be admired. Born with the unmistakable style of Martha Jiménez, this statue will soon be cast in bronze.

Works at Centro de Convenciones Santa Cecilia (Camagüey)

The triptych is basically identified by two favorable aspects: the careful choice of an extra format and successful handling of color precision. For this reason, the system is not conceived for close observation; for this it technically requires a viewer distance of no less than five meters as an elementary rule of appreciation. Only from there can the aesthetic levels achieved by the author begin to be valued. Advenimiento is certainly a praiseworthy, authentic delivery, especially elaborated at a moment of unquestionable creative maturity. It is therefore a most brave proposal, which expresses the dimension of an artist with illustrative probity of the avant-garde.

For its part, Centro de Convenciones Santa Cecilia is an emblem of Camagueyan architectural heritage. The building was constructed during the republican era, as headquarters of the Popular Society of Santa Cecilia. It is located at Plaza de Los Trabajadores, one of the five founding plazas of the town of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe.

Work in Eskisehir (Turkey)

This work was executed at the request of that European city's Mayor and is located in a significant plaza of the aforementioned jurisdiction. Additionally, Martha participated in the sixth National Art Workshop, which concluded with the execution of the painting "From the Spring Series", which was exhibited to the Turkish public with great acceptance.

Work at Hotel Santa María (Camagüey)

Those involved in the installation of the work, in addition to the author, were the Caguayo Foundation and Real Estate Tourism, who managed to turn into reality a project that began in 2012 and was presented to the public, in patinated plaster, during festivities for the 500th Anniversary of Camagüey.

The piece in the cupola of that installation of patrimonial value recreates the three moments of relocation of the town of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe (Punta del Guincho, Caonao and finally the Cacicazgo de Camagüebax, site of definitive settlement), through universal schemes that underscore the unity of human thought. The sculpture seems to examine with its telescope every corner of the city, discovering with amazement the passions of an ancient city that venerates and allows itself to be transformed by the art of Martha Jiménez.

Work in Eskisehir (Turkey)

In the competition participated five invited foreign artists, and the Agramont native upheld Cuban art with her sculptural work of two meters in height in metal and terracotta that will occupy the most important park in that locality. The prestigious Camagueyan artist has been worthy, among numerous accolades, of the Distinction for National Culture and the UNESCO Prize, awarded in 1997. She was also awarded at the International Crafts Fair of Havana and was the only Latin American awarded in 2010 at the Modern Art Biennial in Shanghai, China.

Sculpture on Avenida de San Francisco de Paula (Havana)

Artist Martha Jiménez has a sculpture in Havana. The piece was permanently placed on Avenida de San Francisco de Paula. This visual arts work, titled "Against All Odds" constitutes an artistic gift for Cubans and for visitors to our Island. The sculpture was inaugurated in the context of the Havana Biennial.

Sculpture at Plazuela Juana del Castillo (Camagüey)

Martha Jiménez Pérez participates in the commemorative sculptural project "Guillén in Living Voice", in which the Camagueyan branch of the Higher Institute of Art, the headquarters of UNEAC and the Office of the City Historian also participate. This project has the main objective of incorporating into the urban fabric a sculpture of Camagueyan poet and writer Nicolás Guillén, in walking position, with accessible sound ambiance. The piece will be permanently located at Plazuela Juana del Castillo (or de San Isidro).
