He was the fourth of seven siblings. When he was 6 months old the family moved to his uncle's farm called San Manuel de Pita. Son of a Spanish father, very upright, very honorable, but extremely poor. He worked in the Ciénaga de Zapata south of Matanzas province making railroad ties, which only allowed him to be home 2 or 3 times a month.
At 7 years old the family moved to Las Catalinas and later to María Dolores where he began to attend rural school, there he discovered electricity. In that sugar mill village there was a warehouse where they showed a movie every Sunday, that was his first encounter with art and from there came the idea of becoming an actor.
Later the family moved to Havana and there he worked at whatever he could: he sold lottery tickets, coal, vegetables, he was a store clerk.
One time he was notified of a newspaper ad about an acting teacher, but the cost of classes amounted to 15 pesos and he only earned 25 a month and the store schedule didn't allow for it. He found another job with his brother where the salary was higher and he attended the classes. Since he was almost illiterate and also had a speech impediment with the letter R, the teacher told him he would never be an actor.
He returned home, found every magazine he could, newspapers, everything he had at hand, locked himself in a bathroom and spent 24 hours there reading aloud with a pencil in his mouth.
In the next class, in which the teacher barely paid attention to him, he began to read the same text again, the teacher approached him, placed his hand on him and told him "sorry, you will be an actor", He left there believing himself to be the greatest actor in the world. He had surgery to correct his speech impediment and studied and read every moment he had available.
