Died: June 24, 2022
Cuban actor and acting professor at the Instituto Superior de Arte. He began his work as an actor with the Grupo Teatro del Obstáculo, from where he went on to venture into television and film. He managed to become one of the best talents of his generation, recognized by critics and audiences thanks to his performances on stage and also in film and television.
Villegas was part of the original cast of La cuarta pared, a work by Víctor Varela that premiered 34 years ago and, according to experts, shook the artistic world in the greatest of the Antilles.
Alexis was born in Cumanayagua and graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Instructores de Arte in 1987.
From that year until 1996 he was part of the Grupo Teatro del Obstáculo, directed by Víctor Varela, with which he had important participation in well-known productions such as Cuarta Pared, Ópera Ciega, Segismundo Ex-marqués, and El Arca. He participated in various national and international theater festivals.
His career expanded with solo experiences, when he directed and acted in El trac, by Virgilio Piñera, for which he won the Premio Terry de Actuación Masculina, as well as the Premio Exaequo UNEAC and Mention at the Festival Nacional del Monólogo. He worked alongside Vicente Revuelta in a revision of this acclaimed production, and also in La zapatera prodigiosa, among other projects.
In 1998 he began his work with Carlos Celdrán and Argos Teatro in El alma buena de Se-Chuán. He later participated in most of this group's premieres and in 2002 won the Premio de Actuación Masculina at the Festival de Teatro de Camagüey for his role as Juan in La señorita Julia.
In 2004 he starred in Vida y muerte de Pier Paolo Pasolini for which he received much praise from audiences and specialized critics. With the Grupo de Teatro El Público, under the artistic and general direction of Carlos Díaz, he participated in several productions, such as La gaviota, La celestina and Ícaros.
In film he acted in Cuban films such as Entre ciclones, Tres veces dos, Kangamba and Larga distancia, while in 2011 he starred in Juan de los Muertos.
He also ventured into several television dramas, among which his performance in Escuadra hacia la muerte, by Alfonso Sastre, in a version by Enrique Álvarez, stands out.
He was also a professor of Acting at the Instituto Superior de Arte.
Faithful to the legacies of Vicente Revuelta, Bertolt Brecht and other essential masters of experimentation and theater as a critical mirror of the human being, he leaves an absence that his spectators and friends will deeply lament.
