Lucila Oílzer Labastida Zamora

Lucía Labastida, La Bastida

Died: January 1, 2020

Singer from Villa Clara, regular at El Mejunje. Daughter of singer and percussionist José L. Bastida, founder of Los Fakires.

Lucía Labastida is a kind of temperamental singer, almost extinct from Cuban stages. When she sings it's as if she opens up: she doesn't hold anything back. She has been marginalized for being a lesbian, for her impulsive way of projecting herself on stage, but even so no one could separate her from the musical life of Santa Clara. For her debut, Ramón Silverio, the founder and director of 'El Mejunje', decided to change her name to something shorter, more forceful. From that moment on she would be the turbulent and temperamental singer, "La Bastida," in the style of those other divas like Celeste Mendoza (The charming one), Moraima Secada (The Moor), Merceditas Valdés (The Little Aché), Blanca Rosa Gil (The little doll who sings) or Guadalupe Victoria Yolí (La Lupe).

When she sings, she smokes tobacco, hits her chest and head, it's an outpouring of disrespect, she tangles with the microphone, lifts another long drink of rum to clear her vocal cords.

From the moment Lucía Labastida stood on stage to sing for the first time, she knew she had to do whatever she wanted. Then she performed the most heartbreaking boleros she knew, drank a double of rum mixed with water and took off her shoes in an outpouring of passion.

She began her professional life by performing on November 25, 2000, at the cultural center "El Mejunje" in Santa Clara, where she acquires her stage name, a place where she still remains, fundamentally in the habitual Peña del Filin every Saturday at 6:00 p.m., and in Arráncame la vida, a space of bolero singer José Ramón Vizcaíno, every Monday, also at 6:00 p.m.

In early 2001, Lucía would become an iconic voice of El Mejunje, cultural promoters would demand her in Havana, journalists would write reviews about a choleric and passionate diva emerging from the "outskirts."

She has performed concerts and appeared in artistic galas of the Small Format Theater Festivals held annually and during the Days Against Homophobia and in favor of differences, since their first edition in 2008.

In 2003 she was part of the cast of the show Roly Hood, organized by troubadour Roly Berrrío.

In 2005 she participated in the welcome gala for then Minister of Culture Abel Prieto at El Mejunje itself, and for the National Prize for Theater and Literature Abelardo Estorino. Also in tributes to the outstanding artist Eslinda Núñez and poet Lina de Feria.

She has been a permanent guest at international book and literature fairs and at days against homophobia in Santa Clara. She has participated in several editions of the Festival Boleros de Oro convened by Uneac in Villa Clara.

In July 2009 she toured several eastern provinces as part of the El Mejunje project, performing in the main theaters of the region.

In 2011 and 2012 she performed important concerts at the Teatro La Caridad in Santa Clara, lasting more than two hours with a wide and varied repertoire, in which she shared the stage with performer Vionayka Martínez and troubadour Diego Gutiérrez.
She has also worked in other important places such as the cabarets Venecia and El bosque in Santa Clara and the Museum of Decorative Arts.

In 2013 Labastida starred in the musical comedy "Aquí se enciende la candela", directed by Ramón Silverio.

She has been recognized by the project El Músico en el barrio, organized and directed by professor Isabel Díaz de la Torre.

Lucía Labastida maintains the gathering 'Santa Clara canta' at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Santa Clara. She is also part of the project Abriendo brecha, attached to CENESEX and directed by Mariela Castro.

In 2015 she was invited to close the twelfth edition of the National Oral Festival 'Palabras de Invierno', which was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of "The Lady of Stories," Haydée Arteaga.

At this time she is putting together the musical drama 'En Privado con la Reina', which covers aspects of the life of the great Cuban diva Celeste Mendoza, a work by author Jorge Antonio Fernández Mallea (David Prize for theater 2012), under the direction of prima donna Miriam Muñoz, director of the Icarón group.
She belongs as a professional to the Provincial Music Center in Villa Clara and is evaluated as First Artistic Level.
