Joseph Ros

Joseph Ros is a director and producer of music videos, shows, short films and advertising, as well as an illustrator.

A self-taught young Cuban filmmaker who has directed various highly successful video clips, already premiered on Cuban television, many of which have been nominated for the Lucas Awards.

He made his first clip in 2007 for the rap group La Unión, which made the video and then broke up.

Since he was very young he has been linked to the Lucas television program, which has become a cultural project with more than two decades of existence as the largest and most recognized cultural platform for the development of the Cuban videoclip movement.

Ros owes part of his artistic training to the teachings of renowned Cuban directors and filmmakers such as Orlando Cruzata and others, who now appreciate and award Joseph's talent, also valued positively by specialized critics.

Recognition
His artistic excellence is supported by the fact that at the Cubadisco 2016 Festival, he was the most nominated in the videoclip category, with three works: La carta (a theme that united Buena Fe and Alain Daniel for the first time), Dame guerra (a song performed by Israel Rojas and Yoel Martínez, founders of Buena Fe) and Tiene que estar al llegar, by the group D'CoraSon.

Other creations of his include Recorriéndote (which promotes the album A full, by Luis Barbería and Sexto Sentido), Un sitio para ti (by Nube Roja) and Sin ir más lejos (by Gema Corredera), among others.

He has worked with the popular dance music orchestra La Tabla, with musician and comedian Virulo on a clip for his album Por la izquierda, with M Alfonso on the song "Voy", with the group Habana D'Primera, among others. He has collaborated with artists such as Gema Corredera, Alexander Abreu, Joaquín Clerch and Carlos Fariñas.

At almost 34 years old, and with more than a decade filming clips and winning awards, he no longer knows exactly how many video clips he has made. "At some point I stopped to count them and there were over a hundred, but since then I haven't done it again," he says. "In recent times I make between 15 and 20 a year."

Making video clips in Cuba has its complexities according to Ros. There is a myth that Cuba is cheaper to film a clip than the rest of the world, but that is only up to a point. At least it's not as much anymore. Ros has had the opportunity to exchange with colleagues from other countries and to see their productions, and that has made him realize that Cuban filmmakers are increasingly approaching international standards.

Joseph Ros has a fiction project that he works on long-term. He is very interested in fiction because it would allow him to do things he hasn't done yet. Documentary or putting on shows are also in his plans.

Right now he is working on the design of an album cover for Omara Portuondo, a line in which he has experimented in recent years. In addition, he is making a documentary for Síntesis for their 40 years of artistic life.

After so many years of work, he says that he is always in a constant search, so he would define himself as a seeker, as an anxious creative. His idea is to make things that are increasingly interesting, different, and better accomplished. He wants everything he does to look increasingly like what he would like to see.
