Hiram Sánchez Cagide

Died: December 9, 2023

Sports commentator, a man whose voice narrated the most relevant events in Tunas sports. That January 17, 2019 is still remembered when with his matchless tone and the integrity of a professional of your caliber, he gave the people of Tunas that last out of the Lumberjacks with which we became national champions for the first time.

Sánchez Cagide was born on November 26, 1955 in La Estrella, Hermanos Mayo, Las Tunas. A rural community in the provincial capital that he always defended with great pride.

Since childhood he was drawn to sports and that is why he studied at the School of Physical Education Teachers in Holguín.

He began working in radio in 1969 when at 14 years old he discovered the magic of sound at Mayarí Radio Station, where he worked as a announcer in his first artistic job.

In 1973 he began his career in sports narration and was also the host of the sports segment at the Holguín radio station.

Upon graduating from Epef he returned to Las Tunas to work as a boxing instructor and then returned to Radio Mayarí to work as a recorder, editor and sports commentator narrator.

In 1984 he arrived at Radio Victoria, an institution to which he dedicated his entire professional life. At the Tunas radio station he held various responsibilities as an audio operator, remote control operator, in addition to doing announcing.

That same year he continued his work as narrator-commentator, but what he did not know was that he was going to become one of the referents of Las Tunas and Cuba.

Hirám founded the magazine Sports and More, a space that for 34 years has accompanied lovers of Tunas sports, and gave prestige along with Eddy López and Juan Emilio Batista Cruz to the Tunas baseball broadcasts.

In the memory of the people of Tunas will remain the great duo he formed with Albert Blanco Zayas for many years. The radio combination of Hirám and Albert became historic for achieving great complementarity. Even with different styles they managed to appeal to the thousands of Tunas residents who love baseball.

With his knowledge of boxing, he put his voice stamp on the fights of Teofilo Stevenson, Omar Santiesteban and José Gómez, among others. At that inauguration of the Leonardo Mackenzie sports complex in 1988, Sánchez Cagide was protagonist of the retirement of the greatest Cuban boxer of all time.

Hirám gave the people of Tunas joy, emotion and countless phrases that we will always remember. In the radio broadcasts we will always miss the "if he goes, if he doesn't go" or "the big cat arrived".

Radio lost a professional with almost 40 years of experience in narration and commentary, an illustrious figure in sports journalism, the undisputed voice of Radio Victoria and a mentor of generations.

Hirám was recognized with the 70th Anniversary Seal for being one of the indispensable people at Radio Victoria. His commitment, loyalty and professionalism were evident every time he was on air.

Your departure surprised us all, today the Mella will miss you, but your voice with that brightness and clarity will be present for many years in the ears of every person from Tunas who thrills with their Lumberjacks.
