Hilarión Cabrisas

Died: April 9, 1939

Cuban poet and journalist. He worked in several newspapers and created literary works for which he received awards.

He completed his primary studies in Barcelona. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from the Instituto de Matanzas.

For some time he worked with the dramatic company of Enrique Borrás. Back in Matanzas, he participated in the gatherings that were held in the lower floors of the Palacio Provincial under the name Areópago bohemio.

He began his journalism career at La Nueva Aurora, in Matanzas, and later moved to La Correspondencia, in Cienfuegos. In 1917 he moved to La Habana. He worked at El Día as editor-in-chief and also contributed to Diario de la Marina, Heraldo de Cuba, and El Fígaro.

He was a member of the Academia Nacional de Artes y Letras, of the Círculo de Bellas Artes, of whose Literature Section he was president at the time of his death, of the Asociación de Escritores Americanos, and of the Asociación de la Prensa, of which he was secretary.

In the Concurso Bracale (1918) his opera libretto Doreya was awarded, which, with music by Eduardo Sánchez de Fuentes, premiered at the Teatro Nacional de La Habana on February 7 of that same year.
