Georgina Herrera

Georgina is a poet and radio screenwriter, a cultivator of Afro-Cuban poetry and the theme of the feminine. Her first book was published by the editorial label El Puente. She worked for radio and television for more than four decades.

A native of Jovellanos in the province of Matanzas, she moved to the capital while very young, where she sought to improve her economic situation. She began publishing at age 16, in newspapers and magazines in La Habana. In 1962 she arrived at the radio station Radio Progreso, for which she wrote numerous novels, short stories and theatrical works. She also worked for television and film. She is co-author of the screenplay for the short film Raíces de mi corazón, by filmmaker Gloria Rolando.

Feminist themes abound throughout her entire body of work. She participated in different national and international events, in which she addressed precisely this topic, placing special emphasis on Black women, whose origins she researched.

Her poetry has been translated into several languages, included in anthologies and is studied in universities in England, the United States, Germany and Canada.

She belonged to the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC). She was a jury member of prestigious competitions including the Casa de Las Américas award and the National Literature award.

Georgina Herrera has been a jury member of prestigious competitions including the Casa de Las Américas Award and the National Literature Award.

She possesses the Raúl Gómez García medal, Alejo Carpentier medal, Distinction for National Culture, Writer of Merit of the ICRT, Diva of Radio and Microphone of Radio, among others. She was honored in 2011 at Columbia University, Missouri, for her contribution to the knowledge of African identity values and roots.

Georgina Herrera belongs to the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC).

As an activist, Georgina Herrera has been part of several feminist and anti-racist initiatives and projects, such as the Afro-Cuban Women's Group, which was founded in La Habana by fellow activists Inés María Martiatu, Paulina Márquez, Sandra Alvarez Ramírez, Daysi Rubiera and Carmen González.
