He is one of the most relevant contemporary Cuban playwrights. Artistic director, professor, General Director of Teatro Caribeño. His theater is distinguished by explorations in popular culture and Afro-Cuban traditions. In his dual role as actor and director, he has been characterized by the search for a theater inspired by popular life and the traditions of our syncretic culture, especially in the Yoruba influence, which exists among us in that magical-religious complex that is Santería, a synthesis of the worship of the Yoruba Orishas with Spanish popular Catholicism. Important contemporary Cuban playwright. His intellect is responsible for works of the Caribbean such as: Maria Antonia, Calixta Comité and Mi Socio Manolo; he also has pieces that recreate Yoruba mythology. His work is representative of the old popular art in Cuba.
Born in the municipality of Cerro, Eugenio completed his primary studies in an Adventist school. In 1951 he entered the Superior School 18, Annex to the Normal School of Teachers, and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts specializing in Chemistry, while working as a leather craftsman and receiving secretarial classes in a public school. In 1953 he joined the Popular Socialist Youth and wrote his first theatrical pieces: El pequeño Herodes, Con el corazón del alma and Hoy como ayer y más que antier.
His artistic life began in 1956. His dramatic literature celebrates the popular, with a perspective that avoids prejudices and stereotypes, while recreating the mythology of Yoruba origin with its narrativity, symbols and deities. His work María Antonia, considered among the most important Cuban theatrical pieces of the second half of the twentieth century, is a faithful exponent of this. It is a theater of intense social concern and recurrent philosophical tone.
He has represented Cuban culture on numerous occasions. His theater has been performed on the Island and in other places in the region such as Martinique-Guadeloupe, Venezuela and Mexico. Also in several cities of the United States, Canada, Argentina, Spain and France.
Eugenio Hernández's theater has transcended the ephemeral nature of the stage and has moved into national cinema. "Mi socio Manolo" led to the film "The Useless Life of My Partner Manolo", directed by Julio García Espinosa, (ICAIC) 1989, while the mythical theatrical "María Antonia" was the basis for the homonymous film directed by Sergio Giral (ICAIC), 1990. He was also co-screenwriter of the films "Patakín" (1982), "Roble de olor" (2003), and of the film script for "El Mayor". He has taught workshops and lectures on dramaturgy for theater and film at the International School of Film and Television of San Antonio de los Baños.
He has taught classes in Cuba and abroad. He has also developed valuable seminars on rituals and theatricality, a particularly dear subject, and has been a speaker at international forums. High-impact events such as the Casa de las Américas Literary Prize; the Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana and the UNEAC Literature Contest have counted on his participation as a member of the respective juries. He is a member of the Expert Group of the National Council of the Scenic Arts and of the National Council of UNEAC and Representative of the National Council of the Scenic Arts in CARIBNET. For his work "La Simona", he received the Theater Prize of the Casa de las Américas Contest in 1977. In 1995 he was awarded the Alejo Carpentier Medal by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba. In 2005 he received the National Theater Prize, the highest distinction of the Cuban stage.

Eugenio Hernández Espinosa
Screenwriters
(b. Havana, November 15, 1936; d. Havana, October 14, 2022). Playwright and screenwriter. Founder of several theatrical groups, including Teatro Caribeño, created in 1990. According to historian Luciano Castillo, "Hernández Espinosa has been characterized by the search for a theater inspired by popular life and the traditions of syncretic culture, especially in Yoruba influence. In his prolific production two thematic strands are evident: the assumption of the popular without class prejudices, as expressed in several pieces, among these Calixta Comité (1980), and others in which Yoruba mythology takes center stage: Odebí, the Hunter (1982), Obba and Changó (1983), Ochún and the parrots (1999), The Venerable and The Chosen One. For La Simona (1977), he received the Casa de las Américas Prize".
For film he has contributed the screenplays and adaptations of Patakín (1982), by Manuel Octavio Gómez, The Useless Death of My Partner Manolo (1989), by Julio García-Espinosa, María Antonia (1990), by Sergio Giral, Roble de olor (2003), by Rigoberto López, and El Mayor (2020), by Rigoberto López.
In 2005 he received the National Theater Prize, and in 2020, the National Literature Prize.
