She was the daughter of Ignacio Cervantes and piano, music theory, and solfège teacher Guadalupe Ibáñez.
Initially, Ernestina studied piano at the Conservatorio Municipal de La Habana, and in 1914 she won a scholarship to continue her studies in Germany, but she was unable to move to that country due to the world war.
Ernestina Cabaleiro gave several concerts in La Habana, among them several four-hand performances with other renowned pianists.
For many years, she was a professor at the Conservatorio Municipal de música, where she contributed, with valuable collaboration, to the training of several generations of musicians.
She died on August 12, 1976, at the age of 79.
