Emelina López

She was born in the Havana town of Regla. She received her musical training under the pedagogical guidance of Margarita Horruitiner.

She won the shared first prize of the second edition of the UNEAC National Singing Competition (1973) and three years later made her debut at the National Opera of Cuba, in the role of Leonora, in Verdi's Il trovatore.

She participated in the scenic concert The Birth of Opera (Renaissance music, 1978).

She performed in productions of La bohème (Mimì, concert selections); Madama Butterfly (Cio-Cio-San); Tosca (title role); La esclava (Matilde); La traviata (Violetta); Il tabarro (Giorgetta).

In the 1980s she settled in Spain, where she currently resides, married to actor, historian, and critic Teófilo Calle.

During a visit to her country in August 1995, she gave a recital in the Ernesto Lecuona hall of the Gran Teatro de La Habana, accompanied by pianist Alberto Joya.
