Eisler Liván Hernández Carrera

He is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball for the New York Mets. He is the half-brother of pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernández.

Hernández left Cuba to go to the United States in 1995, playing for the teams Florida Marlins (1996-1999), San Francisco Giants (1999-2002), Montreal Expos (2003–2004), Washington Nationals (2005-2006), Arizona Diamondbacks (2006-2007), Minnesota Twins and Colorado Rockies (2008). He bats and throws right-handed.

Having been selected to the All-Star Game on two occasions, Hernández is known as a great defensive pitcher, having made only 11 errors in his professional career. He is described as a "workhorse"; he throws many pitches, pitches in many innings and starts all the games necessary to provide the entire bullpen with the necessary rest.

Between 1998 and 2007, he never threw fewer than 199 innings in any of those seasons. He was the leader of the National League in innings pitched in three consecutive seasons, from 2003 to 2005, and was the leader in complete games in the first of those three years.
In 2005, he threw 150 pitches in nine innings, although the game went to extra innings after he was relieved from the game.

In 2004 and 2005, he was the leader in Major League Baseball with 3,927 and 4,009 pitches, respectively. Hernández is also a dangerous hitter, winning the Silver Slugger award at the pitcher position in 2004.

After the 2005 season, he had three surgeries on one knee, and his performance in the first half of the 2006 season was declining. Mid-season, he had an earned run average of 5.64 and allowed a batting average of 0.308. But in his last five games with the Nationals, he had an average of 3.27 with four walks and 23 strikeouts.

On August 7, 2006, Hernández was traded from the Nationals to the Diamondbacks for two young prospect pitchers, Matt Chico and Garrett Mock.

In 2007 Liván was the pitcher who allowed the most home runs, with 34.

On February 12, 2008, Hernández signed a one-year contract for 5 million dollars with the Minnesota Twins, with an additional 2 million in performance bonuses.

On July 20, 2008, Hernández was Minnesota's best starting pitcher with 10 wins and 127.2 innings pitched. He finished with a record of 10-6 with an earned run average of 5.29 and 47 strikeouts.

On August 1, 2008, Hernández was set aside to make room for Francisco Liriano.

On August 6, Hernández was traded to the Colorado Rockies, and that's where the 2008 season ended for him.

On February 14, 2009 Hernández signed a Minor League contract with the New York Mets where he has been playing as one of the five starting pitchers.

In 2011 his name was mentioned in a lawsuit against a drug trafficker, which has caused Major League Baseball executives to meet with Federal authorities. There is evidence that Puerto Rican drug trafficker Ángel Ayala Vázquez had a Porsche, a Lamborghini, a warehouse that contained a recording studio, a barbershop and an auto repair shop registered in the ballplayer's name.
