Dimas Juantorena Dánger

Died: September 15, 2018

Composer and melodist. His songs move within the realm of international song. Also known as an athlete and Karate-do trainer.

He was born in Santiago de Cuba, and is the brother of two-time Olympic champion Alberto Juantorena. He studied music theory, harmony, piano and music composition at the Professional Development School "Ignacio Cervantes".

He began his artistic career in 1987. In 1991 he participated with his composition Habanera para dos in the XXV Cantata de Habaneras, held in Calellas de Palafrugell, Girona, Spain; he was a semifinalist in the OTI'91 Contest, with his song Si no tuviera el corazón que tengo; he won the prize in the contest to choose the theme song for the Pan American Games: Canción a los Panamericanos; he was a finalist in OTI'91, with the bolero Tengo la certeza.

A skilled melodist, in his songs that move within the realm of international song, he makes profuse use of modulations and progressions, which is why the interpreter must have good pitch accuracy, allowing them to navigate these "complexities" without difficulty.

Dimas was also an outstanding karate practitioner and was one of the pioneers in the practice of this sport on the Island, and participated in international competitions.

He lived in Mexico, where his daughter resides, and escaped alive from the strong earthquake that shook Mexico City in 1985 by breaking through a glass wall.

In recent years, Juantorena Danger worked as a personal trainer in the private sector.
