September 16, 2018

After suffering for months from stomach cancer, in the morning of September 15, Dimas Juantorena Danger, Glory of Cuban Sports, passed away at the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine in Havana.

The distinguished karate champion was one of the pioneers in the practice of this sport on the Island, which has achieved important triumphs especially in the Central Caribbean region.

A message from the National Commission for Athletes Care at Inder (CNAA) confirms that Dimas represented Cuba in international events with relevant results, and distinguished himself in promoting the practice of this discipline.

Like his brother Alberto, double Olympic champion in athletics, Dimas was born in Santiago de Cuba, but on October 8, 1949. His love for sports was shared with music, as he studied solfège, theory, piano and harmony at the Ignacio Cervantes School of Professional Development.

His artistic career, which began in 1987, led him to be a finalist as a composer in the OTI competitions in the early 90s of the past century, and he also won the competition to choose the musical theme for the 1991 Havana Pan American Games.

The CNAA has extended its condolences to family and friends, on behalf of the Cuban sports movement.
