El Fiñe

Recognized as one of the best athletes in the history of weightlifting, Olympic champion in Moscow 1980, junior runner-up in 1975, 5-time world champion, 6-time Central American champion and 3-time Pan American champion. Recognition by the International Weightlifting Federation among the ten best athletes in the world in the 1980s.

Since childhood he was attracted to the practice of sports, he began practicing diving, but later he turned to weightlifting, managing to join the national team in this sport at only 17 years old, with a height of 1.55 meters and less than 52 kilograms of weight. He began a dizzying career of high performance, due to his biotype his teammates nicknamed him El Fiñe, a nickname given in Cuba to primary school student children.

He made his international debut at the Junior World Weightlifting Championship in Marseille, in 1975, where he achieved the silver medal, which allowed him to be part of the Cuban delegation in different international events, finishing eighth in Montreal 1976. Despite competing in the 56 kg division, where there were important international competitors, he achieved a world record of 125 kilograms in Germany 1977, as he was still within junior limits, in German territory he raised his snatch record in the 56 kg division to secure his first major success.

He is the Cuban who has set the most records, including: Nine world records, four Olympic records and eleven world records in the junior category, he achieved all Pan American records in the 56 and 60 kilogram divisions, respectively.

He retired from active sports in 1987, currently he shares the accumulated experience in weightlifting with high-performance athletes.
