Choir Director.
She studied piano at the Conservatorio «Amadeo Roldán» and choral direction at the Instituto Superior de Arte, where she obtained her Degree in Music (1981).
She graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte of Ciudad Habana, specializing in Choral Direction, later specializing in Berlin.
For 17 years she directed the Choir of the Opera Nacional de Cuba and the Choir of the Gran Teatro de La Habana. She has an extensive repertoire of Symphonic Choral works, operas, operettas and zarzuelas, Cuban and Spanish.
In 1997 she was invited to organize and select the giant choir that accompanied tenor Luciano Pavarotti in the special concert held at the Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá, Yucatán, Mexico.
In 1999 she directed the Barcelona choral festivals, invited by the Federación Catalana de Entidades Corales. At the direction of prima ballerina Alicia Alonso, she directed the Ibero-American Choral Cycles that were held for several years at the Gran Teatro de La Habana.
Invited by the Ministry of Culture, she assumed the direction of the Coro Nacional de Guatemala for 6 months. During that same period she taught a diploma course in choral direction at the Universidad de San Carlos in that same city.
At the helm of her choral group, the Coro de Cámara Vocal Leo, she has received awards and honors. Notable are the two first prizes in A Capella Polyphonic Music and Folk Music at the Concurso Internacional de Cantonigrós on two occasions, in 1998 and in 2008, as well as two Gold Medals in A Capella Choral Music and Popular Music at the World Choral Olympics in Bremen, Germany.
As part of her teaching work, she has conducted workshops in Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Guatemala, Germany and Cuba. In 2010 she was invited by the Instituto de Cultura de Yucatán once again to teach a Choral Direction workshop to the members of the Yucatán choral network and to direct the State Choir at its 25th anniversary in a special concert held for that purpose.
Currently she is a professor of Choral Direction and Score Reading at the Conservatorios Guillermo Tomás and Amadeo Roldán. She is part of the Grupo Nacional de Trabajo for the development of Choral Music and is a member of the Sole Panel for level-passing exams in artistic education.
Among the awards that the Coro Vocal Leo treasures are:
- The two first prizes obtained at the Concurso Internacional de Cantonigrós 1998
- 1st prize for choral singing at Cubadisco 2001 with the work by Beatriz Corona
- Two Gold medals achieved at the World Choral Olympics in Bremen, Germany 2004
- Prize from the Generalitat de Cataluña and 2nd prize for popular music at the Concurso Internacional de Cantonigrós 2008
She has participated in important festivals and competitions in Guatemala, Argentina, Mexico, Spain and Germany, such as the Semana Cantante de Tarragona, the Barcelona Choral Festivals, International Festivals in Puebla, Guadalajara, Mérida and Mexico City, as well as in Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, Córdoba and Rosario in Argentina.
She has participated in important music festivals in Cuba such as the International Choral Festivals of Santiago de Cuba, the América Cantat of La Habana in 2007, the Festival CORHABANA, the Festival Internacional de Música Antigua Esteban Salas, the Festival de Música Contemporánea de La Habana and most recently the Festival de Música de Cámara Leo Brouwer.
She directed the choirs of the Gran Teatro de La Habana between 1978 and 1995, participating in all titles of the Lírico Nacional repertoire, including the premieres of the Cuban operas Soyán by José Massip (1980) and Ecue Yamba O by Sánchez Ferrer (1986) and the exhumations of important titles from national production: La esclava by Mauri (1978), Patria by De Blanck (1979), Lola Cruz by Lecuona (1985) and El caminante by Sánchez de Fuentes (1987).
She founded in 1993 the Grupo Vocal Leo with which she has obtained numerous recognitions in international competitions.
She is married to baritone Jorge Luis Pacheco Borrego.
