Consuelo Milagros Macías Abraham

Consuelo is a specialist physician in immunology and is the Director of the Institute of Hematology and Immunology. Researcher and Full Professor. Full member of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba. Her fundamental work is directed toward immunological diagnosis and studies of immunodeficiencies.

Consuelo is the daughter of the prestigious Cuban physician and professor Dr. Ignacio Macías Castro, an internist and clinician recognized in the country and internationally by the Pan American and World Health Organizations. And she was the wife of professor Ballester, whom she met when she entered the institute. He was its director for several decades, until she took over its direction. In the first years of her professional life, no emotional bond united them.

Ballester was always her professor, whom she admired and respected, but it is not uncommon for students to fall in love with professors and vice versa. After eight years had passed at the institute, their professional work brought them closer together, and love emerged, and love associated with the work relationship, she says jokingly.

Dr. Consuelo began working at the Institute of Hematology and Immunology from her graduation as a physician in the year 1982. At this institution she trained as a specialist and researcher, and there she has managed to satisfy her professional activity and her intellectual needs. Here I learned to research, to publish, to work on research projects, and I obtained the best results with the patients I have treated in the 33 years I have been at that institution of the Ministry of Public Health, said Dr. Macías, a woman of science and conscience.

She completed the specialty of immunology in the year 1985, continued working in the department of this specialty until she came to hold its leadership.

The Senior Researcher, Full Professor and Specialist of II Degree, in 2013 became director of the Institute, which she describes as a family, with great sense of belonging and much job stability.

Awards and relevant distinctions: Order "Carlos J Finlay" of the Council of State.

Dr. Consuelo Macías Abraham, Specialist of II Degree in Immunology, Researcher and Full Professor, Doctor in Medical Sciences and Full Member of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, has been appointed Director of the Institute of Hematology and Immunology (IHI), of Havana, Cuba.
