Communist leader who dedicated his entire life to the cause of national liberation and socialism. He fought for sugar workers in Havana in the Güines region, participating in strike movements. With the revolutionary triumph, he assumed important responsibilities, among them the organization of the Revolutionary National Militias (MNR), in whose ranks he fought against the Bay of Pigs Invasion.
He was born in La Habana, son of Captain Anibal Escalante, a fighter for independence who served as aide under the orders of Calixto García and Berja Dellundé, a primary school teacher.
Emerging from student ranks, at 18 years of age he was already a member of the Communist Party and had suffered imprisonment and persecution. He was expelled from the institute when Rafael Trejo was assassinated for participating in protest activities.
In 1932 he was detained for the first time and sentenced to several months in prison for participating in various protests and popular strikes. He fought for sugar workers in Havana in the Güines region, participating in strike movements. He participated in the funeral of the Ashes of Julio Antonio Mella, was a member of the Integrated Revolutionary Organizations (ORI), delegate to the VI Congress of the Communist Youth International held in the USSR where he had to travel clandestinely.
With the revolutionary triumph, César Escalante assumed important responsibilities, among them the organization of the Revolutionary National Militias, in whose ranks he fought at Bay of Pigs.
He was a member of the Communist Party of Cuba PCC and its Central Committee, where he handled historical affairs.
He died on April 18, 1965 at the age of 50 from a serious illness.
