Belkis Vega Belmonte

Film director and screenwriter with documentary and fiction films made in 35mm and 16mm film, as well as video. Professor of the Documentary Department at the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños. She is one of the most prominent Cuban documentary filmmakers.

She has also worked as an assistant director in television series.

Belkis has directed more than 50 documentaries in film and video and three fiction films for TV. Her work has been awarded national and international prizes, among which stands out the Coral Prize for Best Documentary Series at the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.

She is Full Professor at the School of Film and Audiovisuals of Catalonia –ESCAC–, and has been Professor in the Screenplay Master's program of the Fundación Taller de Guionistas with the University of Barcelona and the International Master's in Documentary at the Barcelona Film School –ECIB.

Since 1998 she has taught in the International Workshops department of EICTV and was Full Professor at the Superior Institute of Art of Cuba from 1993 to 2007. She has been a visiting professor in the United States, Brazil, Mexico City and in various educational institutions in Spain.

She completed studies in Informational Design and is a graduate with a degree in Art History.

She was a war correspondent for the Film and Television Studies of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (ECITVFAR). She has distinguished herself fundamentally for her work in documentary cinema; recognized and awarded nationally and internationally. She was a war correspondent in Africa and the Middle East. She has filmed reports and documentaries in Syria, Congo, Lebanon, Angola and Spain.

She has taught courses and lectures at the Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños, Spain, the United States and other Latin American countries.

She is Associate Full Professor at the Faculty of Audiovisual Media of the Superior Institute of Art of Havana.

She was decorated with the Distinction for National Culture and the José Martí National Journalism Prize, awarded by the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC).

She is a member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC) and of the International Documentary Association –IDA.

In recent years she has directed the project titled Living with HIV AIDS, an experience from which she created the documentary Living on the Edge, whose characters are people living with the disease.
