Aurelio Janet Torres

Died: November 23, 1968

Cuban javelin thrower who participated in the Mexico Olympic Games, he was the first Cuban and Latin American to qualify for the Javelin final at that time with a throw of 80.10 meters.

He was born in San Luis, Santiago de Cuba, was an outstanding athlete and an example as a person. He was a member of the UJC and belonged to the Revolutionary Navy.

He died on November 23, 1968 at the age of 45, in an accident while traveling to Villa Clara.

He began his career as an athlete in 1964, competing in the First Military Sports Games in javelin throwing.

In 1965, he participated in First Category events, in the Champions Carnival and in the Barrientos Memorial. In the National Sports Games, with a throw of 65.32 meters he placed second.

In 1966, after competing in the first category, he placed third in the Barrientos with 63.20 meters. In the "Martyrs of the Revolution" Festival, he was first with 67.96 meters. In the competitions for the selection of the team that would compete in Puerto Rico, he placed third with 73.60 meters.

In 1967 it was a year of great activity for Aurelio Janet. In the Barrientos Memorial, he placed second with 77.72 meters. In the "Copa Cuba", second, with 68.65 meters; in the Champions Carnival, he placed first with 71.14 meters. In the "Martyrs of the Revolution" Festival, third with 68.89 meters and in the ninth Anniversary, fourth, with 72.87 meters.

In 1968, during the first Barrientos Memorial competition he achieved second place with 72.37 meters. In the First Category competitions he was first with 76.60 meters. He then joined the Cuban Delegation for the Mexico Olympic Games, where he broke the national record that had been held by Justo Perello since 1965 which was 77.34 and Janet achieved a throw of 80.10.

The last competition in which he participated was the International Athletics Festival "Tenth Anniversary", held in October 1968, where he achieved first place with a throw of 78.58 meters.
