Asiel is a film director and screenwriter, known mainly for his work in advertising, short films, and music videos. He has worked with Alejandro Sanz, Orishas, Beatriz Luengo, Omara Portuondo, and Gilberto Santarosa. He is the creator of the audiovisual production company Alternativo Art.
He has distinguished himself as a film and advertising director, screenwriter, producer, editor, and art director. Multi-awarded and recognized as one of the most outstanding directors of Cuba, with an ascending trajectory in the field of visual arts.
His path in the arts began by studying classical guitar and Plastic Arts at the "Raúl Martínez" school. Later he took workshops in directing, dramaturgy, and screenwriting at the Higher Institute of Art (ISA) and at the International Film School EICTV.
He began as an audiovisual filmmaker and photographer in Morón, Ciego de Ávila, at that time filming with a home camera. His debut in the music video field was in 2012, while as a photographer, his first experience was associated with an independent film in 2011.
As a director, he has directed artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Beatriz Luengo, Omara Portuondo, Gilberto SantaRosa, Pedrito Martinez, Lila Downs, Los Van Van, Alexander Abreu, Issac Delgado, Orishas, Leoni Torres, Paulo FG, Waldo Mendoza, Frank Fernandez, Buena Vista Social Club, Fito Paez, and many more.
Asiel Babastro directed the music video for the single "Yo vengo a ofrecer mi corazón," a song by Fito Paez performed by Omara Portuondo, as a duet with Mexican artist Lila Downs. Furthermore, he has put his signature on audiovisual productions by Los Van Van, Orishas, Ara Malikian, Alejandro Sanz, Beatriz Luengo, Alexander Abreu, Cucurucho Valdés, Paulo FG, Waldo Mendoza, Pablo Milanés, David Blanco, Leoni Torres, Pupy y los que Son Son, Haila y Divan, for which he has obtained awards and nominations. He has been honored at the Lucas Awards in his country on several occasions for his work with artists El Chacal, Divan, Pedrito Martinez, and Carl Gustafson.
The filmmaker has ventured into other audiovisual genres with documentaries, short films, and movies. He is also the creator of the production company Alternativo Art. He is also preparing two films and a fiction series.
He has developed various personal and collective exhibitions of painting and photography, and also has private collections in countries such as Germany, the United States, France, and England.
Asiel Babastro came to the United States to deliver his talent, vision, and creativity, establishing ties with Sony Music Latin among other major companies where he is further developing his potential.
Recently, Asiel Babastro partnered with fashion designer Yas González of House of Yas. Together they created a clothing line, "Babastro X Yas," with original designs, handbags, and masks. "White and black are the protagonists because things that endure have always been written that way, in black and white. I think what will define the collection is that people will wear pieces that they will discover as they wear them, because they carry a story with them, accompanied by symbols, maps, concepts, signatures, stamps, and where Africa, Cuba, the U.S., Spain, Asia, and Latin America intermingle," Asiel Babastro said to DIARIO LAS AMÉRICAS about the collection that comes 100% from the imagination of both artists.
