Arturo Rodríguez was born on February 6, 1956, in Ranchuelo, in Cuba's Villa Clara province. As a teenager he left Cuba with his family for Spain, living in Asturias and Madrid, before the family settled in Miami in the mid-1970s. He attended Miami Dade Community College and is regarded as a self-taught painter.
His figurative, psychologically charged work explores memory, family, exile, identity and the cultural landscape of Miami. Early in his career he illustrated children's books under the pseudonym Hierommus Fromm. He has been married since 1984 to the artist Demi, a relationship that has often shaped his painting.
His paintings are held in public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Lowe Art Museum and the Israel Museum. In 2026 the first monograph devoted to his career was published by Gli Ori of Milan.
