Cuban-American painter Arturo Rodríguez launches his first monograph, spanning 47 years of work, in Coral Gables

Cuban-American painter Arturo Rodríguez presents the first monograph devoted to his work on Saturday, September 26, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Books & Books in Coral Gables (265 Aragon Avenue). He will discuss the book with music producer Nat Chediak and art historian Carol Damian, professor emerita at Florida International University, at a free event introduced by gallerist Oksana Salamatina, according to the bookstore's listing.

Titled simply Arturo Rodriguez and published by Milan's Gli Ori, the volume traces more than 47 years of painting, from the dark, muted landscapes of the early 1980s through the brighter, more lyrical canvases of the 1990s and 2000s to works dated 2025. It features full-page plates of some 200 works, photographs of the artist in his studio, a conversation with Salamatina, and essays by scholars including Lynette Bosch and Juan Martínez.

Born in Ranchuelo, in Cuba's Villa Clara province, in 1956, Rodríguez left Cuba as a teenager, lived for a time in Spain and settled in Miami in the mid-1970s. A largely self-taught artist, his figurative work, centered on memory, family, exile and identity, is held by the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Pérez Art Museum Miami, among others. Earlier this month, the University of Miami hosted an evening with the artist to discuss the publication.
