Cuban filmmaker collaborator of the late Mexican filmmaker Emilio "El Indio" Fernández
He began his film career in the 1940s as a directing assistant to Juan Orol, a director of rumbera films, in the film Embrujo antillano, from 1945. Later, he took part in La única (1952), by Ramón Peón, with Cuban singer and actress Rita Montaner, then he distinguished himself in Mulata (1953) and was part of the filming crew of La rosa blanca (1952), alongside Mexican filmmakers Emilio "El Indio" Fernández, Gabriel Figueroa and Roberto Cañedo.
In 1959 he founded with commander Camilo Cienfuegos and directors Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Julio García Espinosa, the Film Department of the Rebel Army. With these filmmakers he shot 'Esta tierra nuestra', La vivienda and Por qué nació el Ejército Rebelde.
Promoted to cameraman, in 1959 he founded the Cuban Institute of Film Art and Industry (ICAIC) and worked on Sexto aniversario, the first documentary of that seventh art entity. He worked for more than 30 years as a camera instructor for Cubans and foreigners from his position as cameraman of the ICAIC News, to which he belonged until his retirement. He was a member of the UPEC, the UNEAC, the National Association of Historians and honorary member of the Association of Film Critics.
He is the author of the books Cronología del cine cubano (1960), Orientaciones para un principiante en cinematografía and more recently, as co-author with Luciano Castillo, of the book: Ramón Peón, El Hombre de los Glóbulos Negros.
He also collaborated regularly as a writer with specialized publications in Cuba and abroad and provided thesis advisory services for the University of Havana and the Film School of the ISA. He was awarded the Raúl Gómez García Order and the Distinction for National Culture.
