Pérez Roura was a renowned Cuban radio broadcaster and commentator. Armando Pérez Roura — who founded Radio Mambí 35 years ago and received countless awards and recognitions throughout his long career. Pérez Roura began his career at age 15 in Cuba, excelling at island radio stations such as Radio Reloj and CMQ. He was also dean of the National College of Radio Broadcasters of Cuba and president of the Inter-American Association of Broadcasters, AIL.
Armando was born in Ceiba Mocha, Matanzas. After leaving Cuba in 1962 and going into exile in Miami, his successes as a broadcaster continued. Pérez Roura was a famous opponent of Fidel Castro, hosting recognized political figures as guests on his popular program En Caliente on Radio Mambí. He later graduated with a degree in Political Science and earned a doctorate in Human Resources from Biscayne College.
In exile he was a broadcaster for WQBA, WRIZ, which is currently WRHC Cadena Azul, as well as WFAB, WOCN and WAQI-Radio Mambí. With the latter station he had a special relationship since he was its founder and general director, in addition to hosting the program "En Caliente", which set the tone for the Cuban exile community against the Cuban revolution for many years.
After retiring from Radio Mambí in 2015, he hosted the program Toma nota on La Poderosa 670 AM.
"His voice was very powerful. Armando's editorials carried weight and he spoke for our exiled community". Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has expressed, whom Pérez Roura supported as well as the Díaz Balart family, his friends.
His extensive career in front of the radio microphones in South Florida earned Pérez Roura the distinction of being "the leading figure of Cuban radio in the United States", but he also received important awards granted to Spanish-language broadcasting.
In honor of his contributions, Univision renamed the Radio Mambí studio after him as Estudio Armando Pérez Roura.
The voice of Armando Pérez Roura fell silent after a myocardial infarction on November 23, 2020 at his home in Miami.
