Virulo

Virulo is a Cuban humorist and singer-songwriter, and is also a founding member of the Nueva Trova Cubana.

He graduated as an architect in 1981 from CUJAE, and at the end of the 1980s he settled in Mexico City, a country where he has resided since 2008, alternating his stays in Cuba. He has been a host, screenwriter, and director of television programs and theater groups, as well as a composer for some films and animated cartoons.

His father was a founding member of ICAIC, where he was director of the Animation Film Department.

During his secondary school years, Virulo, before dedicating himself entirely to humor, was a member of a rock and roll band called "los Sioux".

In 1972 ―at the age of 17― he began his artistic and professional career as a founding member of the Nueva Trova Cubana, alongside Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, and Noel Nicola.

He directed the National Theater Ensemble in Havana.
He enrolled in the Architecture program at CUJAE, from which he graduated in 1981.

He was director of the National Ensemble of Shows of Cuba and of the National Center for the Promotion of Humor.

At the end of the 1980s he moved to Mexico City, where he continued his career. He regularly returned to Havana to present his musical shows. Since 2008 he has maintained his residence in both cities: Mexico and Havana.

An admirer of the group of Argentine humorists and musicians Les Luthiers, he created a character that paid tribute to the character Johann Sebástian Mastropiero (created by Les Luthiers).

Von Sauerkraut was the main character of his trilogy Sex, Then I Exist, Then I Think, The Constipated Soprano, and Il medio castrato. Through Konstantín von Sauerkraut, all kinds of situations taken to extremes are narrated, encompassing to a greater or lesser extent human behavior as an individual or in his social environment. In Sex, Then I Exist, Then I Think, the central theme is sex and is approached from a wide variety of viewpoints, of which three stand out:

- the interest that sex awakens from childhood, in this case from a male point of view and the environment that surrounds it;
in this exploration, the different phenomena that exist in current society;
- the relationship between both sexes in different types of societies and therefore particular ways of viewing sex from a psychological point of view.

In The Constipated Soprano, the life of Konstantín von Sauerkraut continues. In this part, the character's life becomes entangled, like a reflection of those stages of uncertainty that humans suffer in the search to find their place in this world. This album is a reaffirmation of the Konstantín von Sauerkraut within us, the one that shows human fragility in crossing the blurred borders.

In the album Il medio castrato, the last part of Konstantín von Sauerkraut's life is narrated. In this third part, Konstantin's uncertainties manifest themselves in the "maturity" of his life and the analysis of the behaviors of people over 50 years old. Through Von Sauerkraut's investigations, a couple of stories are sung about a book written by the Frenchman Julio Verne and the Italian Emilio Salgari, and a second story that tells about Ludovico Capelli di Angeli who was a supposed opera singer who lived during the era of the "castrati".
